Maddy
Maddy Koch (she/her)
Maddy is a middle school educator who came to teaching through a less traditional path. A Montessori school graduate herself, she attended Mountain Pathways in Boone, NC from primary through middle school. In high school and after college, she returned to the same school as a substitute teacher and reading tutor.
Education has been a thread throughout much of Maddy’s adult life, both inside and outside of classrooms. Her experience ranges from teaching CrossFit in college to facilitating community meetings about the North Carolina energy grid during her time as an organizer with Appalachian Voices. She deepened her love for education while earning a master’s degree in Political Science and Environmental Policy.
Maddy’s favorite part of teaching is that it is always evolving—no two students are ever the same. As a hyperactive, dyslexic, and self-described rebel child, she credits great Montessori teachers with helping her turn challenges into strengths and develop a lifelong love of learning. She is especially drawn to middle school, a time when students begin to discover what they care about while building confidence in themselves and the wider world. Maddy loves supporting and facilitating that journey for her students at Friends-Montessori.
Outside the classroom, Maddy enjoys spending time in the woods with her partner, daughter, and pets. She loves nearly any form of physical activity and cooking—especially when it doesn’t involve following a recipe too closely.
